This painting begins to express the accessible nature of individual and collective memory or history, the open space in which personal and shared stories seem to reside, and their potential as sources for reflection, creativity, and wisdom.
The painting depicts an open drawer as a symbol for memory or history. The film camera is a metaphor for old stories and the creative process by which they unfold. The dried roses represent latencies that might be rejuvenated through rediscovery.
I staged the photo reference for this painting in my home. I used an antique 16mm film camera, which I found in a flea market, and I picked the roses from my front garden and dried them in my studio for a week prior to taking the photo.
This painting is the 2nd part in my The Liminal Space series, which explores imaginary places where ideas, identity, and possibilities await manifestation.

T. Markvart
Miller Lake, Ontario
Markvart's work plays with abstract realism and still life to explore themes related to consciousness, identity, and change. She paints with acrylic ink on birch wood panels, allowing the wood grain to emerge through the medium in surprising ways.
