With this painting, I begin to express the psychological-spiritual space of a personal life transition. The image for this piece appeared to me in a waking dream, so it is composed of symbols from the language of my subconscious, as explained below.
The entire disembodied figure represents a detachment from identity. The frame/head is a symbol for mind and the image within the frame gives a sense of both loss and acceptance. The tree has lost a major limb and seems to be dying, but it still stands strong, reaching up to the cloud in the sky.
The hanger and robe represent a detachment from all matters that hold us in place. And it gives the viewer a sense that something new will soon be worn.
On the left, a curtain that has been pulled back to reveal the main subjects of the painting like an "ah-hah" moment.
There are two light sources, one warm source from the right and a cooler light source light t up the cloud and tree within the frame. The curtain has been lit by both sources of light to denote a threshold space between physical and nonphysical - known and unknown - worlds.

Miller Lake, Ontario
Markvart's work plays with abstract realism and still life to explore themes related to consciousness, identity, and change. She paints with acrylic ink on birch wood panels, allowing the wood grain to emerge through the medium in surprising ways.
