During a drive to Squamish I saw this view along the Sea to Sky Highway as the sun was breaking through the clouds on a cloudy evening at dusk. It was painted at a time in my life when I had just studied with Toni Onley and was still inspired by his colours and armed with the new use of my sumi brushes to create flowing brushstrokes and subtle changes in grey tones. The scene is particularly special to me as Vancouver Island is where I grew up and at this one spot along the highway you can view the island in the distance. I came to Vancouver when I had just finished high school to pursue my career in art and have had quite a ride since then. Now, 30 plus years later, I teach this method of painting in my loose landscape workshops honouring my friend and mentor.
