This painting is inspired by many trips across the Georgia Straight on the ferry to Vancouver Island in my younger years when I came to Vancouver to go to art school. My parents were still living in my hometown of Comox and I was travelling alone to go home to visit on holidays. I wanted to give it a nostalgic feeling that represented my longing for home. During an evening sail the sea has a moody feeling when you can see the dark clouds roll in as a storm approaches. I am drawn to the light that comes from beneath the clouds and the way the dusk turns the whitecaps a vibrant aqua colour that contrasts to the black of the sea. Using texture medium I enhanced the roughness of the waves and allowed the texture to give movement to the paint, bringing the waves to life. The crossing of the dangerous ocean was a symbolic right of passage on my homeward island journey.
