About the Artwork
Although the Physalis Alkekengi is native to south and north-east Asia, this plant has spread to most of the world's temperate zones. To protect its seed-bearing fruit, the plant produces a fused calyx resembling paper lanterns. This painting depicts the plant in late fall when its surface and pigments begin to degrade, revealing the intricate network of veins in the calyx and the leaves.
