This piece explores the relationship between shape, value and pattern within the tablescape. I worked with a limited palette, using the darker values to create a strong underlying structure against the larger areas of lighter colour.
As the painting developed, I introduced repeated patterns into the vessels and surrounding areas. The checks, stripes and small marks contrast with the looser organic shapes of the plants and flowers, giving me another way to move between structure and spontaneity.
I simplified the objects into larger shapes and allowed the patterns to become part of the composition rather than decoration. The tablescape continues to give me a framework where I can experiment with how value, shape and pattern work together while keeping the objects familiar but not completely representational.
