These are White Magnolias glowing in the moonlight. A traditional Japanese ink stick made from pine soot and indigo powder is ground giving a blue black ink and an inkstick made from powdered clam shell is used for the white. The inksticks are ground on separate suzuri or ink stones, just before painting. A single feather was used to paint the entire picture which is on hand-made Chinese xuan paper died with green tea & mounted on a wood canvas. I carved the signature stamp from rock using steel tools. The meaning of this stamp or hanko is 'elegant'. Which magnolias certainly are. I could smell the magnolia's scent wafting on a light breeze in my mind as I painted.
