About the Artwork

"The Guardians" is a new work from my Treaty 7 series.
The background is a hand painted representation of a map from 1891 that recorded the location across Canada of all reservations under the 11 Treaties. I included only the region encompassing the land under Treaty 7 in Alberta and Montana.
The Blackfoot people represented here are represented here in transparent archival oils, based on the black & White photographs taken by Roland Reed, a photographer that lived among the Blackfoot in about 1900 to 1912 (public domain).
