From the Old Souls series of paintings. We think of growth as linear, but in doing so, we give up some of the best things of the past for what we tell ourselves is meant to improve our lives. You could order a house straight out of the Eaton's Catalogue to the prairies of Alberta. This house sits high on a hill, surrounded by sapling growth, its eyes to the south, watching the world change. It sits, with its posh front room, two stories, and a built-on side entrance from the barn, as a symbol of success. The upstairs window, if you look closely, seems to have someone looking out at you, with the shutter half drawn. Perhaps that is why the current land owner doesn't want to remove it - the presence of ancestors can still be felt.

In Nancy's work, you can see the wind caressing the prairie grasses or gently lifting and playing with the hairs of a paint horse's tail.
