"Beyond the Pale" means outside the bounds of acceptable behaviour. "Before the Pale" is a double entendre that means - before European settlers. It was a time when First Nations and bison wintered in Banff National Park in the shadow of Mt. Rundle and Buffalo Mountain beside the shimmering Vermilion Lake. The beauty and bitterness of an Alberta hoar frost cakes the bison's fur and magically transforms the trees and landscape into sugared eye candy. Natural beauty must be preserved, and often, there is a moral question about the original intent of national parks versus the current overuse for commercial and recreational means. Human dominance and greed may eventually obliterate the natural inhabitants and leave the beautiful vistas the empty homes of their natural inhabitants. To quote Joni Mitchell ~ they pave Paradise and put in a parking lot.

In Nancy's work, you can see the wind caressing the prairie grasses or gently lifting and playing with the hairs of a paint horse's tail.
