In early July, wild Mariposa Lilies can be found in my community in the Okanagan. Their delicate mauve flowers grow on single tall stems which appear to be dancing among the wild grasses. Blooming for only a few days and listed as an endangered wildflower it’s a rare treat to witness them.
This painting was created by applying thick acrylic paint using a palette knife over a single coloured under-painting, allowing the underlying colour to peak through. I created this technique especially for my Series titled "Okanagan Harmony Series" of which this painting is included.
Although this scene no longer exists due to development, it records the former majestic Ponderosa Pine trees and bunches of wild grasses so typical of the Okanagan terrain with Okanagan Lake in the background and the striking mountains of West Kelowna. Overtime, this painting has become a testimony of the glorious land that once was and the graceful harmony of praise it once sang.
