Ed and Mabel Nookemus were Huu-ay-aht First Nation, living in Bamfield, B.C. As a child in the early 60's, our families became good friends and we often stayed with them when in Bamfield. In 1982, my husband and I reconnected with Ed and Mabel while living in Nanaimo, B.C. and for the next 7 years they often made the drive from Bamfield to stay the weekend in our home. Ed and Mabel had 16 children but only 11 lived to adulthood. Ed had become a Christian and most sentences were inserted with "thank-you Jesus". My husband and Ed shared life changing experiences in the gospel and were in a sense "living bibles". Ed passed away in the late 90's and my husband followed in 2005. In my painting I have taken clips and shreds from my husband's marked up and falling apart bible, and woven it into the painted image of Ed Nookemus reading his.
