It would seem a rare circumstance for scale to be cast aside in a representational painting, but such is the case in “Turquoise Pool, Kennedy River”. There is little relational reference between objects, which normally might feel quite unsettling as our brain habitually tries to make sense of a scene. Yet ironically, this lack of reference seems benign. From the first word of the title the suggestion is clear that this painting endeavours to captivate the viewer with a promise of a space that contains the same clarity and luminosity as that turquoise water.
