I bought this stone at a carving symposium many years ago, and loved it from the start for its crazy form. In carving Great Gabbro I explored several themes. As an abstracted human form the sculpture expresses wild, whirling abandon, expansiveness, and both vulnerability and balanced power. In the juxtaposition of its rough, untouched, still bouldery edges and its highly polished smoothly curving surfaces it is a study in contrasts. And because those polished surfaces are smoothly curving concave mirrors, the reflections of its environment are endlessly fascinating.
