The Sumallo River is located in the Cascade Mountains of southern British Columbia, east of Hope where Highway 3 follows its banks as far as the old growth forest of Sumallo Grove. First Nations knew the water courses in these interconnecting valleys well and it is said that the name means “mellow” or “lazy” as given to the Hudson Bay explorer by his native guide in 1846. An important habitat for endangered species and a source of inspiration on a favourite scenic travel route, this landscape hums with the texture, diversity, complexity and richness of our wilderness.
