“Shattered Summer” has multiple meanings for me. Although it depicts the vibrant colours and energy of the season, it was also completed during the recent heat wave when fires were destroying towns and mollusks baked on the beach. The intensity of the painting has a somewhat foreboding feeling as we are reminded of the impact of climate change and how the months that used to be associated with vacations and fun are now for many a time of uncertainty and fear.

Karen Marki's paintings are layers of several works built onto the canvas like an excavation site, encouraging the viewer to see what lies beneath. Her process includes using unusual tools to create markings and texture inspired by both the urban and natural world.
