Joomchi is a Korean traditional method of felting paper from many layers of mulberry paper. The papers are wet and layered and then rigorously manipulated by hand until the fibers are broken down and felted together. No glues or adhesives are used. This forms a strong single sheet with an interesting surface texture. At one time these sheets were stitched like fabric or leather, and used for clothing or pouches in Korea. As an artist I have recently begun to explore this technique and I find it intriquing.
