Winter sun breaks through cold grey skies and warms the last of the day - as if it was reminding us of its presence and power in case we had forgotten. Winter can seem cold and monochromatic on the surface, but when looking deeper there is a broad palette of surprisingly rich colours. I have exaggerated the golds and burnt sienna hues with watercolour to contrast with deep black of charcoal. The oblique angle of the sun back-lights the trees and creates a fiery focal point. It appears as if the bulrushes are an audience to the spectacle, jostling for position to soak up the last of the sun's warmth. Elongated shadows stretch the composition and contrast with gently rounded snow in the foreground and delicate lacy trees on the Islet.

"The subject of my work is light, whether painting sweeping historic architecture, remote landscapes or intimate still lifes. My work is based on travelling to explore both urban and wilderness landscapes, experiencing, observing and then portraying how light changes our perception of these environments."
