Individual components (shape, pattern, value, line, colour) are separately articulated in ways intended to create a composition (placement, space, rhythm) that moves from abstraction to suggested figuration. I wanted to integrate two distinct goals. One is an exploration of the wonderful properties of colours (hues, saturation) applied in different ways (stains, opaques, overlays) combined with spontaneously playful and structured mark-making. Abstract paintings need not "represent" anything but the act of painting. Yet my second goal in "Part of It All" is visually to suggest a conceptual abstraction of a figure in the flow of related elements in the ground that creates her: a becoming into being. I do believe we are linked to and changed by the ground we live in. The reaction or meaning you may gather from "Part of It All" is, I hope, an alluring and continually interesting one.
