This painting is about the fragility of the perfect fit. Interconnecting triangular shapes map a space of calm and seeming completeness enhanced by the gentle fall of light and clean sharp lines where edges meet. But disintegration in the shadows – the unraveling of the perfect fit – mars the tranquility. Underlayers of paint disturb the even surface and the diagonal composition threatens to tip us over. As well, the flat space of the painting has a deceptive topography, a slide into the fiction of three dimensionality. The concentration of light at the intersection of four triangular shapes in the upper right quadrant - an apex of sorts - suggests a pyramidal form. The perfect fit may be about to come apart.

Hester Lessard
Victoria, British Columbia
Hester Lessard is an abstract painter who works mainly in oil and cold wax. Her work is luminous and contemplative. It shimmers with light, plays with blurred and sharpened edges, and explores colour harmonies and disharmonies inspired by coastal geographies.
"I try to glimpse quiet stillness in the messiness and noise of life. I think that is why the fall of light across shapes and surfaces, be they weathered, broken, or beaten apart, is a recurrent theme in my work. Working abstractly allows me to prioritize those luminous moments."
