Manet dans le Jardin
Manet is known not only for his huge influence on art and artists, but also for his gardens at Giverny in France. He created these gardens as an endless painting subject, and I suspect as a refuge to retreat to.
Reference for Manet’s profile was a low quality, black and white historical photo. No attribution was provided.
From this reference I invented what I think is a reasonable recreation of the artist’s features.
The abstract textures and high chroma shapes in the bottom left corner represent the garden. The garden is further enhanced by juxtaposing it against the unfinished clothing and beard.
Although the garden is brightly coloured it is has soft indistinct edges. It does not compete with Manet’s face for the center of interest.
The unfinished beard and suit establish this as a 2 dimensional vision; the only illusion of 3 dimensions being modelling in the face.
I kept a similar palette and impressionistic painting approach to that of Manet to best illustrante the mood his paintings usually project.
