The piece is from my Diaspora body of work, which deals with the dispersion of people from their home country, with specific reference to my parents’ escape from Estonia in the 1940’s when the Soviets were invading, and their lives afterwards.
The acrylic work on a round panel employs flag colours from Estonia, the USSR, Sweden, the Canadian Red Ensign and Maple Leaf. The expanding bands represent waves of influence from two cultures. The composition was developed to appear to vibrate to reflect the confusion that people experience when emigrating under duress. Will life ever settle down? Visual interest is further increased by a rough surface texture that reflects light in unpredictable ways.
