What started as a plein air painting in the McDowell Mountain range in Arizona, ended up as a studio painting at home in Lac Le Jeune. Having learned about the Saguaro Cactus, I was inspired to write this poem titled, Desert Soldier.
Bold saguaro
In solitary stance
Guards the desert
Take no chance.
He claims the day
He rules the night
Warning intruders
of desert’s plight.
His prickly arms
His steadfast roots
Oh, how his sweet side blooms
Amidst the scorching maze.

My first love was to work in oils and this holds true today. The smell, viscosity and feel of paint on my brush as it marks the canvas is what keeps bringing me back to my easel day after day.
