About the Artwork

This piece pays homage to my Babcia, who fled war-torn Ukraine for Canada in 1927. Her solo journey took her to Glasgow, then to Quebec before making her way to Alberta. The map of Ukraine, on her left, is turned upside down to represent what she left behind with the map of Montreal on her right to show the start of her new home. Stitches and collages were added as a nod to her creativity, her amazing sewing skills and as a reminder of the way she had to thread her way to Canada.
