Exploring the relationship between coarse and smooth surfaces intrigues me. As soon as I put down the rough white material on the canvas, it spoke 'Kimona' to me, summoning memories of a long ago trip to Japan. I added layers of textured paint and paper collage, then ripped off bits of the collage to create a three dimensional mottled effect, suggestive of the pines and cypress plants in a Japanese garden. A Kimona floating in the clouds above Mt. Fuji emerged, and the title arrived, from the historic period known as the “floating world” (ukiyo-e in Japanese), a time of movement and travel, art and culture in eighteenth century Japan.
