Richard Austin

Chelsea, Quebec

Richard Austin is a Canadian painter, independent filmmaker, photographer, and former art editor whose multidisciplinary artistic practice is rooted in decades of visual storytelling. A committed advocate for regional arts and cultural engagement, Richard plays a leadership role in Chelsea’s arts community. As Director of Visual Arts and a member of the governing board at Centre des arts La Fab, he supports local and regional artists through curatorial programming, mentorship, and public exhibitions. He is also an active contributor to the Artists in Their Environment Studio Tour, opening his studio to the public and helping to build bridges between artists and audiences. He helps foster inclusive and cross-cultural artistic experiences in the western Québec region.
My practice of creating contemporary, abstracted art based on the Canadian landscape involves vivid colours, flattened perspectives, and assertive contour lines, evoking spaces that feel both familiar and dreamlike, rather than depicting a specific geographic reality. I’m drawn to expansive vistas and ambiguous forms — scenes that stimulate intuition.
