About the Artwork

Onyx is a translucent sedementary rock made over centuries by the deposition of minerals by water. (I'm) Like A Bird contrasts the hard polished surfaces which expose the beauty of the stone with the natural texture of the native material. The sharp corners and angles contrast with the pillowy curves and softened with the silhouette of a hummingbird surrounded by the translucent pink light of the delicately thinned onyx. Made entirely from reclaimed building and memorial materials.

Inspiration for Bruces’ is the shapes and forms of the natural world. Organic contours and edges comprise his work. A blank canvas such as Carrara marble or complex hues of onyx, infinite number of ways to view and appreciate these forms, experienced fully by tactile appreciation and interacting with art.

"Experience shape and form of natural stone through tactile interaction."
