“Downward Dog” began as a study of the challenging experience of recreating drapery. I’ve always had dogs in my adult life, and creating a playful puppy was obvious to me as soon as I saw the lovely variegated stone. It began as a demonstration piece during the Peninsula Art Tour and many hands helped create the initial form.
My granddaughter visited my studio, saw the puppy emerging from under the blanket and named him immediately. “Downward Dog” of course is a reference to a yoga pose and he playfully crouches with as his hind quarters lift the blanket. His gaze as he rests his head on his paws, invites you to join with him in the fun.
Like all of my work, “Downward Dog” invites touch. Sculpture is tactile, and a variety of textures will convey as much as colours can in a painting. It fills my heart when family, friends and collectors want to interact with a sculpture, to reach out and touch him.
