In painting the figures in this image I have adapted a technique from the old masters — that is, applying multiple layers of coloured, transparent glaze over a tonal drawing and underpainting. When viewed together, these layers produce a subtly coloured, highly detailed portrait. Called the indirect, or classical method, this is a demanding and sometimes painstaking process that requires careful planning and many hours to complete.
