About the Artwork

Do you ever just want a break from all the chaos of life? Set against a window filled with soft daylight, this bouquet of hydrangeas becomes a small world in itself and a place to meditate on the good things we have.

I use a heavily textured, collaged technique for the petals using recycled dry paint, wanting them to feel tactile and alive. Maybe this is proof that beauty can be built up, layer by layer, even from fragments.

This painting is part of a four-piece series “An Invitation to Pause” born from a need to slow down and find refuge in ordinary, overlooked moments and the corners of our home where peace still quietly resides, regardless of the chaos beyond.

Karen Girard is an emerging Calgary artist whose bright, highly textured works have people asking “how do you do that!”

She often incorporates paint skins, using leftover paint that would usually end up in the landfill or down the drain, to sculpt and add life and interest to her pieces.
