Brass Tea Set #6
Not For Sale
This piece is part of an ongoing series of paintings depicting various reflective metal objects, primarily brass tea wares. In this image, as in the others, the reflections of self that appear in all paintings - even those seemingly photographic in their appearance - is explored. In the centre of this depiction of a brass sugar bowl, the object reflects the painter in the process of photographing the object. Other small imperfections in the painting slowly unravel the viewer's perception of this object as detached from its austere surroundings, hinting at a complex environment. These minor deviations point to the limit of perception, while the final work attempts to simultaneously exalt the ability to transcribe images, and honour that which is visually pleasing. The meticulous labour that can contribute to a painting has an ability to elevate the subject to a level of importance that can be connected to ideas of beauty and its association with virtue, goodness, or morality. These are important themes to consider when viewing this work.
