This piece is part of a process I underwent to find and use a motif that would relate to me as having a Western European /western Canadian heritage. Most linguistic groups in the world possess and utilize meaningful motifs such as “form line” in their heritage to express their images and use in ceremonies. In thinking about a motif I came to feel that my heritage involves the framing of concepts, ideas, people and so on with our Western ideas. Instead of “natural” or curvilinear representations I decided to see how I might use my “frame” motif firstly in exploration of space in form in non-objective works. This piece is a foray into using my motif to represent the phenomenological world. I challenged myself to represent, in this case, a tree blowing in the wind, using only frames , this is not about cubism.
Of course, colour comes into play when representing atmospheric feeling i.e. what one feels and experiences instead of just sees.
Doing representations this way I feel I’ve stepped out of my comfort zones of representing these things in “realistic ways”.
