Drowning In Words So Sweet
C$1,980
I work with oil paint and photography to explore ideas I often can’t express with words. My work is rooted in questions of recognizing the self in place and the quiet tensions between societal expectation and personal truth—particularly in the context of women’s experiences. I use painting as a way to better understand the world and the stories we carry, inherit, and shape.
Drowning in Words So Sweet captures the delicate tension of withholding—where we choose our words to protect or please others, fearing the consequences of speaking our truth. In this struggle, our true voice fades, leaving us uncertain about how to truly express ourselves.
My process is guided by attention to material and impulse. I build compositions on wood panels and paper, allowing the textures of the surface to become part of the narrative. I layer portraits into spaces, surrounded by bold colour, geometric forms, and florals which reflect moments of time, expectations, and insights.
Through contrast and layering, I explore the tension between who we are, who we are expected to be, and who we are becoming. Rather than seeking resolution, I aim to hold these questions visually—offering space for reflection.
