Glaciers have been present since the last ice age but are now in decline or disappearing altogether as the climate becomes warmer. Glaciers are a crucial source of fresh water in Western Canada since they release water into the environment during the summer months. The reduction of water runoff from melting glaciers will impact water tables, agriculture and the availability of drinking water. After visiting the Columbia Icefields many years ago, I still remember the intense turquoise colour of the ice and the fascinating “under the ice” caves flowing with glacial water. An otherworldly place and source of life.
I have incorporated a variety of materials in this artwork including impasto gel, fibre paste, sand, Golden crackle paste along with acrylic paints. A Gamvar coat has also been applied over this textured surface.
