About the Artwork

Castilleja, commonly known as paintbrush, Indian paintbrush, or prairie-fire, is a genus of annual and perennial herbaceous plants native to western North and South America, Asia and Russia. The flowers are edible and were used by First Nations tribes as a condiment with other fresh greens. The flowers, if eaten in small amounts in moderation, have similar health benefits as garlic. The Nevada Indian tribes used it to treat STDs and enhance the immune system. The plant was also used as a secret love charm. There are many varieties and colors of the blossoms ranging from bright red to cream, with some varieties having only the tips colored.
