This piece is part of a series of paintings that utilize bedding as a symbol of comfort, protection, rest and escape from our daily lives. These surroundings can also act as soft walls, barriers that protect them from the outside world, but also separate and hide that world from them.

In both motif and technique, this figurative painting nods to romanticism and surrealism. The textures intermingled with the copper leaf are created by applying different chemicals that produce an array of patina effects. The uncorroded metal leaf symbolizes our ideal of sleep being pure and uncomplicated. Falling asleep and the state of sleep itself is much more complex, ambiguous, and somewhat mysterious.
