I painted a series of large (36" by 30") close-up portraits of my friends. I selected the area between the chin and just above the eyebrows. Something happens when you focus on this area. The features become iconic and another 'self' emerges. A Divine Self. This is the 'god' or spirit of enquiry. Are these portraits? Yes and no. My friends' faces are the starting point for an investigation into the mystery of what it is to be human. They are themselves and they are the More of themselves.

"I paint to get at the essence of my subject, to understand its mystery. I want to create the feeling one has, when light suddenly hits a surface and there is a moment of illumination. I wish to engage the viewer in this sense of mystery, these apparitions of light."
