Through the ancient medium of gold leafing, I explore the passage of time; about how it affects our environment and reflects on our own mortality. I purposely age the material I use, exposing its flaws while at the same time revealing its beauty. I try capturing an ephemeral moment in the aging process as a metaphor of time passing and our inability to stop it.
This way of using gold leaf is innovative, as it is usual to leave the leaf in it’s pristine reflective state, whereas I am always researching new ways to age this timeless medium with acids, tar, etc., as well as scratching and sanding the surface to make it my own.
