This is a portrait of my partner Lucas. The flowers sitting on top of the smoothly rendered image are essentially thick gobs of oil paint. I made these three-dimensional flowers with techniques that would normally be associated with decorative baking, such as a cake or cupcakes, and substituted what would typically be sugar or icing with oil paint. The reason I did this is because I wanted the flowers to disrupt the portrait, subvert the meaning of the original image and add another layer of meaning. The flowers represent my love for this individual, they are a physical manifestation of my feelings through my artistic mark making.
