Starlings almost look like crows with their glossy black bodies. Yet these unassuming birds look different when the light strikes in a certain way. Suddenly their glossy feathers begin showing off flashes of blue and purple, mesmerizing the eye. The iridiscent feathers throw up a play of colours that is captured in this painting. This is a Ruppell's starling, found in eastern Africa.
