With social media, one can have hundreds or thousands of online friends. But are close friends still there and what does close friendship mean? Can we call someone up when we want to talk, or should we send them an email or text? What does a 3-line text convey? My daughter was thinking of moving to New York. I imagined all of the isolation a city like that could mean. Headsets blaring music on the subway shutting out everything around you, while crowds of people are standing so close that they can touch you. Everyone the same, walking down the streets in suits, looking straight ahead.
