This piece is layered with oil and cold wax on a cradleboard. I began without a preconceived idea of what the finished work would look like, allowing the painting to develop intuitively. I worked in layers, building and obscuring marks and forms until the composition began to reveal itself.
Abstract Expressionism allows a work to remain emotionally open-ended rather than directing the viewer toward a single interpretation. In this painting, the shapes withhold information; forms emerge and disappear beneath the layers, inviting the viewer to slow down, look closely, and find their own meaning.
Throughout the process, I allowed the painting to inform me about what it needed compositionally. The resulting work is an exploration of what can emerge when intuition, gesture, colour, and uncertainty are allowed to guide the painting.
