About the Artwork

I walked into rehearsals for a play and there in the middle of the usual, cluttered, drab environment, lit by a harsh fluorescent glare, sat Andy, our Stage Manager. She was an oasis of colour, joy and organization. She reminded me of those Renaissance portraits of craftsmen, surrounded by the tools of their trade. The concept for this painting is Order vs. Chaos. There is a certain chaotic joy in the red, black and white Order that Andy has established.

"I paint to get at the essence of my subject, to understand its mystery. I want to create the feeling one has, when light suddenly hits a surface and there is a moment of illumination. I wish to engage the viewer in this sense of mystery, these apparitions of light."
