Francis is a distinguished portrait painter and my studio mate. This work began as a study but I decided to take it further. I was conscious of capturing the gaze of someone who spends his life looking. The bust is not just about likeness, but also of about presence and the intensity of a person engaged in the act of seeing. Working from life and photos, I was interested in the discipline of observation, - his and mine.
