Artist statement_ Claudia is one of those people I was, compelled to sculpt. Like a medieval Madonna, her lovely large eyes, long straight nose, and oval face were very striking. She was about 18 when I made this work.
Happily, she agreed to sit for me when I approached her. Creating this portrait with her hair up off her neck, I then worked on the shoulders and chest until I achieved a pleasing composition. In creating portrait sculpture, it is astounding the sense of history one achieves. It is as if one traces genetic lineages down centuries.
