The creative journey with this piece was such a joy as it pushed into a style incorporating realism, as I have worked in for the past few years, with abstraction. The goal was to create a dream-like piece that portrays the feeling and personality of the cat while moving into a more loose and free form. Imagine a painting with a piece of hand-dyed fabric laid over it with areas of transparency so only portions of the subject show through. In my minds eye, I saw the cloth as being dyed using colours that move from intense to soft values changing freely across the surface. A harmonious blend of style and colour was the goal and has been achieved in this multi-media piece. Watercolour was laid down over the sketch of the cat, highlighting areas by using more intense chroma and values, while allowing other areas to be quite dilute. Pencils and pens were used to bring the cat to life.
