When we moved to an acreage we began raising chickens and I've been on a steep learning curve ever since. I didn't even know that chickens for eggs and chickens for meat are totally different. It's been an emotional rollercoaster to keep from walling off my heart to these beings that are literally bred for slaughter. Now I love them all the way through, I feel a sense of honour and reverence to be able to care for these magnificent souls. I recognize now that my feelings of guilt and anxiety are not helpful for anyone, especially them. The best I can do for them is love and gratitude. I'm honoured to have the opportunity to share the beauty in something that in the past has had me turn away, and not want to think about, seeing it's wholeness as opposed to a commodity neatly wrapped in plastic at the grocery store. My intention is to express our intimate connection with the food we eat.
