The painting's title , "Loveliest of trees, the cherry now" is from A.E. Housman's poem of the same name---- the second piece in his 1896 collection ‘A Shropshire Lad’ . Known for its formal metre and rhyme, and melancholy tone, the poem helped make the self- published book a bestseller.
