This painting is based on a photograph I captured at sunset in Mexico of a gymnast mid-performance. The blazing sky reduced the figure to a powerful silhouette, transforming the athlete into a sweeping, calligraphic shape against the horizon.
I was drawn to the contrast between the intense orange glow and the cool distant clouds, but more importantly to the gesture—the extension, balance, and tension suspended in a single moment. The strong backlighting simplified the anatomy into a bold value statement, allowing movement to take precedence over detail.
