About the Artwork

This painting is a diptych. As I approach the later years of my life, I spend considerable time reflecting on life events gone by. Shame on Me speaks to the regrets that still live within me - how I treated others in the past, things I said or didn’t say, opportunities not taken and ignored.

Shame masks were used during medieval times (usually on women) to publicly expose those who went against social norms to ridicule and humiliation - I have employed the shame mask on my self-portrait as a visual penance or atonement for my past sins.

EDMONTON, Alberta

Donald’s true passion has forever been art. Portraying the links between science/nature and art is central to his being - he seeks to discover the 'architecture' of the natural world and how living things (including humans) ‘fit’ in, thus creating an awareness and greater appreciation of the somewhat 'invisible'.

"I work towards the preservation of wonder, the 'wonder' of nature, and the 'wonder' that each of us carried in our hearts as children which sometimes evaporates with age. I want viewers to not only value and become conscious of the beauty that surrounds us, but also the beauty within."
